“Jeff, would you like to share a cab?”

They talked a bit more, and by the end of orientation, Mr. Bridges wanted to stay in touch with Ms. Micikas, but she had left without him noticing. “I was thinking she was beautiful and intelligent and witty, and she had put me in my place,” he said. “But now I couldn’t find her.”

Late for the airport, Mr. Bridges gave up his search and walked to the Harvard Square taxi stand. He did not notice Ms. Micikas, who was getting into a cab a few yards in front of him. But she spotted him. “I was daydreaming about him right at that moment,” she said.

He was stunned to hear her call out.

“Jeff,” she recalled shouting, “would you like to share a cab?”
